ROOTING AND ESTABLISHMENT OF RHODODENDRON MICROCUTTINGS |

| Abstract:
Rhododendron microshoots produced in vitro can be rooted inside the greenhouse. Microcuttings may be rooted in a peat/perlite soil mix supplemented with a slow release fertilizer. Rooting occurs within 14–21 days in a high humidity environment. There are a number of different methods to provide a high humidity such as: fog, closed tent, open bench, and closed containers. There is clonal variation in the speed and percentage of rooting. Acclimation and establishment of the rooted plantlets occur over a 30–60 day period. Light levels of at least 50–100 foot candles are necessary for rooting. Botrytis is the most serious fungal disease of microcuttings. Rooting microcuttings in vivo is more cost effective than stage III rooting. | |
