ISHS Acta Horticulturae 363: III International Symposium on Replant Problems

DEVELOPMENT OF BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF APPLE REPLANT DISEASE

Authors:   R.S. Utkhede, E.M. Smith
Abstract:
Field trials were conducted near Summerland and Kelowna in the Okanagan valley, and near Creston in the Kootenay valley of British Columbia, Canada to develop biological control of apple replant disease. The response was measured by trunk cross-sectional area (TCA) and shoot growth of apple trees. The application of strain EBW4 of Bacillus subtilis was effective in promoting growth of apple trees at the Kelowna and Creston sites. The application of monoammonium phosphate was effective in promoting apple tree growth only at the Summerland site. These results indicate that the strain EBW4 of B. subtilis has the potential for biological control of apple replant disease in the Okanagan and Kootenay valleys of British Columbia.
