PRACTICAL METHODS FOR OVERCOMING HARDSEEDEDNESS IN SOME ORNAMENTAL ACACIA SPECIES

Authors:   G. Magnani, M. Macchia, E. Moscheni, G. Serra
Abstract:
Six ornamental Acacia species (Acacia Boormani Maiden, Acacia implexa Benth., Acacia kybeanensis aiden & Blakey, Acacia myrtifolia Willd., Acacia rubida A. Cunn., Acacia terminalis Macbride) were examined for their germination characteristics. In all cases percentage germination was rather low, corresponding to the high content of hard seed. For removing primary dormancy induced by coat impermeability the following treatments were applied: 100 °C with dry heat and 100 °C in boiling water; for each of these two treatments exposure times to heat were 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 minutes. Boiling was generally the more effective heat treatment for reducing hard seed content.
