ISHS Acta Horticulturae 362: International Symposium on Agrotechnics and Storage of Vegetable and Ornamental Seeds

EFFECT OF SEED STORAGE AND SEED SIZE ON GERMINATION, EMERGENCE AND BULBLET PRODUCTION OF AMARYLLIS BELLADONNA L.

Authors:   U. Amico Roxas, G.V. Zizzo, S. Agnello, A. Sciortino, G. Iapichino
Abstract:
A study was carried out in order to evaluate the effect of seed storage and seed size on germination, emergence and bulblet production of A. belladonna. A 30 or 60 days cold storage at 4° C before germination did not have negative effects on seed viability. Besides, the cold storage treatment reduced mean time germination and mean time emergence. A positive correlation was found between seed size and seed viability. Our results suggest that a large amount of A. belladonna bulblets can be produced by seed as long as seeds > 1 cm. are used. Big size seeds produced bulblets of bigger size and higher average weight than those obtained from small size seeds. However, further researches should be undertaken to investigate the possibility to produce by this method marketable bulbs.
