EFFECTS OF PRE-SOWING PEG (POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL) TREATMENTS ON THE GERMINATION AND EMERGENCE RATE AND TIME OF CARROT SEEDS

Author:   R. Yanmaz
Abstract:
In this experiment, PEG treatments were applied to carrot seeds to determine the appropriate concentration, treatment temperature, and the duration of priming time. For this purpose, carrot seeds were primed at 15°C and 20°C for 5, 10, and 20 days in PEG-6000 solutions having osmotic potentials of -5 and -10 bar. Primed seeds were germinated, and accounts were made in 3-day intervals.

According to the results, the germination and emergence rate were increased in all pre-sowing PEG-6000 treatments. The germination time in treated seeds eventually decreased to the germination times of the control. The treatment protocol of 15°C/-5 bar/ 10 days gave the best results for germination and the emergence rate and time for carrot seeds.
