INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE AND SOIL WATER CAPACITY ON THE EMERGENCE OF ONION SEEDS

Author:   M. Kretschmer
Abstract:
Experiments were carried out in climatised chambers with fluorescent tubes at different temperatures (10,15,20,25 °C) and water capacities from 30 to 80 % with steps of 10 %. Onion seeds of cv. 'Hysam' were sown in a sandy loam 2 cm deep. At the water capacity of 30 % the temperature of 10 and 25 °C reduced the emergence much more than 15 and 20 °C. The emergence results at water capacities from 40 to 80 % and at temperatures from 10 to 20 °C laid about 90 % and more. High results were also found at 25 °C and at water capacities from 60 to 80 %. Lower water capacities diminished the emergence continously. The water capacity influenced the emergence with 58 and the temperature with 16 % respectively. The quickest mean emergence time (6–11 days) and the shortest final emergence time (15–20 days) were investigated at the temperature range from 15 to 25 °C and at water capacities of 70 to 80 %. Therefore, under such temperature conditions, a quick, and consequently a uniform emergence is possible to achieve by controlled irrigation.
