Abstract:
Washed and not washed "seeds" of Florence fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill. var. azoricum Tell.) were germinated at constant day and night temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C or at alternanting temperature of 25/15 and 30/20°C, in the light and in the dark or continuosly in the dark.
Germination at 30°C was 64%, no germination occurred at 35°C, while germination was similar at other temperature (81%). The speed of germination was greatest at 25 and 30/20°C. Washing and light improved germination slightly.
In another experiment mature seeds harvested on two successive occasions were tested at high temperature (35°C) for duration of 120, 96, 72, 48, 24, 18, 12, 6 and 0 h.
Germiation percentage of early-matured "seed" was higher than those of the later maturity and T50 was shorter compared to the control when high temperature durations was longer than 18 h.
