ETHYLENE AND PEA GERMINATION

Authors:   L. Petruzzelli, P. Perrino, F. Harren
Keywords:   Pea, germination, ethylene synthesis
Abstract:
Pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Frijaune) seeds produced ethylene concomitantly with germination. The evolution of ethylene showed a main single peak during the initial root growth. The gaseous hormone could be considered a necessary factor for the germination since 2,5-norbornadiene, a competitive inhibitor of ethylene action, inhibited pea germination and exogenous ethylene overcame this inhibition. Moreover, the results show that the seed vigour as well as temperature changes during imbibition markedly affected C2H4 production of pea seeds. Thus, the determination of rate of ethylene evolution can be a very useful and sensitive method for assessing the performance of peas.
