SEED TREATMENTS AGAINST DORMANCY IN OKRA (ABELMOSCHUS ESCULENTUS (L.) MOENCH).

Authors:   E. Nada, S. Lotito, L. Quagliotti
Abstract:
Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench shows a particular kind of seed dormancy, called delayed permeability, caused by the structure of the seed coat and particularly by the chalazal plug.

The classical treatments against dormancy are ineffective, while there is a direct relationship between the seed moisture content and delayed permeability, with variances between cultivars and moisture contents.

Different treatments of accelerated ageing, with many combination of temperature and time (20°C, 30°C, 40°C for 4, 8, 12 days), were tested to increase the seed moisture content.

With the analysis of regression two levels of treatments were pointed out to solve the dormancy in all the samples tested (no treatment, four days in the accelerated ageing chamber at 40°C and 100% RH).

An equation, based on the mean velocity of germination and the frequency of delayed permeability seeds, permits the determination of the adequate treatment for each sample.
