IRRIGATION MANAGEMENT STRATEGY OF GREENHOUSE CROPS IN MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES

Author:   A. BAILLE
Abstract:
This paper first discusses the interactions between the crop and greenhouse microclimate in determining plant and greenhouse water status, and their implications for possible improvement of irrigation management in the specific conditions of mediterranean greenhouses. The analysis clearly show a strong coupling (or feedback effect) between crop transpiration and microclimate (i.e. the climatic potential demand). The way this coupling effect can be controlled and accounted for is discussed in view of irrigation and climate control management. Some examples of the influence of microclimate control on crop transpiration are presented.

In the second part, some general considerations are given on the present state of art in matter of greenhouse irrigation techniques and management in the case of soilless cultures. The need for a more pertinent information on the behaviour of the substrate-plant-atmosphere subsystems and more elaborated models for predicting their water status is emphasized. Some suggestions for improving the available information (sensors) and subsequent treatment and use for irrigation scheduling are proposed.
