NITRATE ACCUMULATION IN CELERY AS AFFECTED BY GROWING SYSTEM AND N CONTENT IN THE NUTRIENT SOLUTION

Authors:   G. Martignon, D. Casarotti, A. Venezia, . , . , F. Malorgio
Abstract:
Lowering nitrate concentration in vegetables is desiderable due to possible negative effects of a high nitrate ingestion. Two trials has been carried out in 1990 and 1991 in a greenhouse, growing 3 cultivars of celery both in soil and in rockwool with an open hydroponic system.

The aim of the trials was to determine the accumulation of nitrate taking into account two different growing systems, the capacity of cvs. to accumulate nitrate and the effect of a complete removal of nitrate from the nutrient solution one week before harvest.

The nitrate concentration was higher in plants grown in rockwool fertilized with a complete nutrient solution than in plants grown in soil; a significant reduction of nitrate and total nitrogen concentration in plant was observed in soilless culture by removing nitrate from the nutrient solution for one week.

Besides significative differences in NO3 accumulation among the cultivars tested have been observed.
