Abstract:
The export of leek (Allium porrum L.) to certain countries demands the absence of any kind of contaminants on the plant.
This can be obtained by cultivating leek in hydroponics.
A comparative study between hydroponic and field cropping of leek shows that it is possible to grow leek successfully in hydroponics.
Different plant supporting systems are possible, emphasizing increasing the production, improving the quality of the product and automating transplanting and harvesting.
Under Belgian climate conditions, using a plastic greenhouse, it is possible to harvest three crops a year.
