ISHS Acta Horticulturae 361: International Symposium on New Cultivation Systems in Greenhouse

A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN SWEET PEPPER GROWN IN NUTRIENT FILM TECHNIQUE AND ROCKWOOL UNDER PROTECTED CULTIVATION

Authors:   A.F. Abou-Hadid, M.Z. El-Shinawy, A.S. El-Beltagy, S.W. Burrage
Abstract:
The current study was conducted at the experimental station in Wye college, London University, during the period from January to September 1991 in a glasshouse under controlled conditions. The work was done in order to study the difference between sweet pepper plant behavior in NFT and rockwool. The results showed that the plants grown under NFT system gave higher total yield than those grown in rockwool. There were no statistical differences between plant height, leaf number, T.S.S., average fruit weight and fresh and dry weights. The water consumption for sweet pepper grown in NFT could be considered as the actual irrigation requirement for rockwool system. NFT system gave $4.08/plant higher than the rockwool mainly due to the extra cost of rockwool slabs.
