ISHS Acta Horticulturae 360: I International Symposium on Ornamental Palms

DAMAGE CAUSED BY FROST ON PALMS (ARECACEAE): A CASE STUDY

Authors:   D.V. de Toledo Filho, P.R.F. da Rosa, A.M. Neme
Keywords:   palm collection, palm species, Brazil
Abstract:
In July 1981, the palm collection at Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, was damaged by a frost. Since information on the effect of low temperatures on palms is important to guide their utilization, the damage on 103 species and one hybrid of this collection were evaluated. Data were recorded on the environment where the plant was being cultivated (full sun, part shade or shade), plant size, degree of damage and recuperation after four years. Frost damage varied in intensity in all palms planted under full sunlight. Palms growing in shaded areas presented little damage or they were not damaged at all. Plants of 15 species died after the frost. Palms of the other species recovered after four years. Special care to protect plants from frost will allow regrowing palms lost in the collection.
