ISHS Acta Horticulturae 360: I International Symposium on Ornamental Palms

NUTRITION OF ORNAMENTAL PALMS

Author:   T. K. Broschat
Keywords:   Arecaceae, mineral deficiencies, macronutrients, micronutrients, fertilization
Abstract:
Of the 16 essential elements, only N, K, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, and B deficiencies are routinely observed on palms. Macronutrient deficiencies are usually a result of shortages of these elements in the soil or from nutrient imbalances, while deficiencies of micronutrient cations usually have cultural or environmental causes. Common causes of micronutrient deficiencies in palms include high soil pH, complexation with phosphates or organic matter, nutrient imbalance, and root problems such as root rot diseases, poor soil aeration, excessive planting depth, or cold soil temperatures. Treatment of these culturally-induced deficiencies involves first correcting any such known cause prior to fertilization.
