Abstract:
This experiment had as its objective to identify adequate substrates and irrigation frequencies for nursery production of Rhapis excelsa. Seedlings were planted in plastic bags filled with nine mixtures of soil, cow manure and vermiculite in different proportions. Seedlings were submitted to two irrigation frequencies, weekly and twice a week. A factorial (9 x 2) experiment with 5 replications was installed. The experiment was carried out under laths, at Jaboticabal, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Six months after planting, growth of the palm seedlings was satisfactory in all treatments. At the lower irrigation frequency, seedlings in the substrate composed by soil + cow manure + vermiculite (2:1:1) formed a higher number of leaves in comparison with seedlings on the substrate of soil + cow manure (3:1). Soil + cow manure (3:1) presented the lowest water retention capacity and seedlings in this substrate formed more leaves when they received more frequent irrigation. It was concluded that for the experimental conditions irrigation may be done weekly using any of the compared substrates, except soil + cow manure (3:1); for this last mixture, irrigation must be done twice a week.
