| Abstract:
Container grown palms are raised for essentially three markets: liners for field production; mass market retail sales for residential landscapes; and interior specimens, both mass market houseplants and interiorscape use. There are basically four production regimes for growing palms in containers each with their associated markets: containerized sun-grown; containerized, full sun grown, shade acclimated; containerized, shade grown; and containerized field grown specimens. A container medium for palms should be slow to breakdown with percent air space of 10–15% and a water-holding capacity of 30–40% by volume. Tropical palms grow most productively at temperatures between 24 and 35°C. Growth of many species may slow considerably below 18°C. Production times vary widely depending on the species and the finished size, from 1.5 years for fast growing species in 11.5 1 containers to 5 or more years for a slow-growing species in a 26.5 1 container. | |
