GENETIC RESOURCES OF PALMS

Author:   A. Valois
Keywords:   Arecaceae, biodiversity, germplasm, conservation, Brazil
Abstract:
Brazil is the third in the world in diversity of native palms, with about 387 species and 37 genera. Many of these palms are presently or potentially of economic importance. Therefore, they are the subject of conservation in situ and ex situ to be used in programs of breeding and biotechnology. The present paper treats general aspects of genetic resources and germplasm, and their relationship with biodiversity. The importance of domestication of palms is discussed. A brief comment on the main palms of economic interest is included. Also is included an explanation on the present status of conservation of this germplasm in the National Program of Research on Genetic Resources coordinated by EMBRAPA/CENARGEN. Further actions concerning with management of palm genetic resources are commented.
