Abstract:
Bahia is the fifth largest State in Brazil with an area of 561 026 sq. km. The State has a diversified topography (sea level to 1850 m) and superimposed on this diverse landscape (composed of restinga, rain forest, seasonal forest, caatinga, cerrado and campo rupestre vegetation types) is a rich and diverse palm flora. The palm flora of Bahia can be summarized as follows: TOTAL GENERA = 15; TOTAL SPECIES = 57; TOTAL HYBRIDS = 6; TOTAL VARIETIES = 1; GRAND TOTAL = 64. This paper is an abbreviated introduction to the rich Bahian Palm flora and an attempt to briefly summarize some of the interesting problems encountered in the field and laboratory research for this study.
