IDENTIFICATION OF A COMPONENT OF THE CARNATION STREAK DISEASE: THE "YELLOW AND NECROTIC BLOTCH" REACTION |

| Abstract:
Although a few well-known viruses, such as carnation ringspot virus (CRSV), carnation mottle virus (CMV), carnation vein mottle virus (CVMV) and carnation latent virus (CLV) produce recognized symptoms on carnation, there remain many symptoms of unknown origin that affect their growth and flower production. Poorly defined diseases such as "etched ring" and "streak" are much more difficult to diagnose and are caused by a complex of viruses. This paper describes observations made in Belgium during the last two years to determine the etiology of the disease called "streak". "Streak" symptoms in carnations described by Jones (1945) in Washington State are similar to the "streak" disease symptoms described in continental Europe. "Streak" observed in the United States by Hollings (1961a) corresponds to what is described herein. | |
