PRODUCTION OF VIRUS-FREE LILIES |

| Abstract:
In order to produce virus-free hybrid lilies it was necessary to identify the viruses in lilies. Although the virus diseases of lilies had been summarized by McWhorter and Brierley (1963), two modern diagnostic methods, electron microscope and serology, had not been applied. Therefore, lilies were surveyed for viruses with emphasis on electron microscopy. Results of this survey have been reported (Allen, 1971). Since Lilium longiflorum Thunb. had been grown in tissue culture (Sheridan, 1968), this technique was used to attempt to grow hybrid lily clones. If plants were produced, they would be examined for virus particles. The end product would be plants that were virus particle-free, and ideally virus-free. Lilies would be considered virus-free if they do not have 650 nm or 750 nm virus particles in leaf extracts and do not affect assay hosts for cucumber mosaic virus. No other viruses of lilies have been detected in my material. Once obtained, the virus-free lilies would be grown on culture media to determine how rapidly they could be multiplied. | |
