| Abstract:
Several virus diseases are described producing mosaic symptoms on plants of Passiflora sp. in Australia by Cobb (1901), in Kenya by McDonald (1937), in South Africa by Storey (1940), in England by Bewley (1923), in Sumatra by Palm (1922) and in New Zealand by Chamberlain (1954). Cucumber mosaic virus was reported by Noble (1928) and Taylor and Kimble (1964) to induce Passion fruit woodiness and Zschau (1964) reported that Passiflora mosaic was caused by cucumber mosaic virus. Van Velsen (1961) found a Passiflora chlorotic spot virus in New Guinea that is probably related to cucumber mosaic virus. A virus rod-shaped was also reported by Taylor and Kimble (1963, 1964) to induce Passion fruit woodiness. Similarly, Martini (1962) found a flexuous rod virus associated with Passion fruit mosaic. The subject of this paper is the description of a virus disease of Passiflora coerulea, the partial identification of the virus, and the ultrastructure of the diseased plant. | |
