FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE VIRUS OF CHRYSANTHEMUMS IN BELGIUM |

| Abstract:
Among the several viruses or virus diseases described by Hollings (1957b, 1960b, 1961b, 1962b, 1963, 1968) and Kryczynski et al. (1971), only chrysanthemum aspermy virus (CAV), chrysanthemum virus B (CVB) and chrysanthemum stunt virus (CSV) have been identified and studied in detail in Belgium. Viruses of the "mottle diseases", as well as one virus with very long flexuous particles, are also present; but they have not been identified. The most important varieties cultivated in Belgium are the chrysanthemums used at "1 nov.". These one-year plants are cultivated in pots or in the ground and are frequently infected with CAV and CVB. The other varieties, which are grown in increasing numbers, are the chrysanthemums cultivated year round. They are mostly affected by CSV and the "mottle diseases", but seldom found infected with CAV or CVB (Verhoyen et al., in preparation). The major problem we had to resolve was the detection of CAV and CVB. Because of the erratic responses in the detection methods we employed, attempts were made to improve the sensitivity of the tests. | |
