| Abstract:
Virus diseases of Pelargonium sp. are common and occur world-wide. Several isolates have been identified as strains of other known viruses. Tomato bushy stunt virus and carnation Italian ringspot virus are strains of pelargonium leaf curl (Hollings and Stone, 1965). Tomato ringspot virus was isolated from Pelargonium hortorum (Reinert et al., 1963). However, there are other isolates whose relationship with known viruses have not been definitely established. Isolates R3, R4 and R5 were not definitely identified (Reinert et al., 1963). A general characteristic of Pelargonium viruses is their masking by high temperatures (Hollings, 1960a, 1962a; Kivilaan and Scheffer, 1959; Reinert et al., 1963). The present paper presents evidence on the identification of cucumber mosaic, pelargonium leaf curl and probably a new virus, P2, found infecting Pelargonium plants. The identification was made by host range and electron microscopy. A modified method of tip culture was used to obtain healthy plants. | |
