GROWTH AND BEARING OF 'STANLEY' PLUM ON CLONAL MYROBALANS AND 'DAMAS C' ROOTSTOCK

Abstract:
Growth and yields of plum tree cv. 'Stanley' grafted on 5 clones of myrobalan and one clone of 'Damas C' rootstock were being evaluated during 1982–1992 in a trial orchard. The trunk-cross-section area, crown volume, number of suckers, yields (kg per tree) and specific yields (kg per cm2 of t.c.s. area) were evaluated every year. The tree vigour was highest on these myrobalans: SE 4040 (114,7 cm2 and 15,3 cm3) and SE 4043 (113,6 cm2 and 16,3 m3). The smallest trees were on the rootstock 'Damas C' SE 4045 (94,7 cm2 and 12,6 m3). Only the difference between the clone of 'Myrobalan SE 4040' and the 'Damas C' was statistically significant. Suckers were most abundant on 'Myrobalan SE 4040', then they followed 'Myrobalan SE 4041' and 'Damas C SE 4045'. Distinctly fewer suckers were on 'Myrobalan SE 4044'. The total yield from a tree for 1985–1992 were highest on 'Myrobalan SE 4040' and 'Myrobalan SE 4041 (103,0 and 108,9 kg). The lowest yield had trees budded on 'Damas C SE 4045' (79,1 kg) and 'Myrobalan SE 4042' (77,7 kg). Differences in specific yields among the rootstock were, however, not statistically significant and ranged between 0,79 and 1,03 kg per cm2 or between 5,71 and 7,67 kg per m3.
