ISHS Acta Horticulturae 359: V International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetic, Breeding and Pomology

THE EFFECT OF THE ROOTSTOCK ON VARIOUS MORPHOLOGICAL TRAITS OF THE VARIETY (P. DOMESTICA)

Authors:   R. Renaud, M. Canelas
Abstract:
Some effects of rootstock on the variability are well known : vigor, early or late fruit setting, level of production, size and coloration of fruit.

The objectives of this work were to define the rootstock effects on:

the main shoot (one year's old) :

  • length,
  • number and length of the lateral shoot,
  • length of internodes.

the leaf :

  • leaf area,
  • petiole length,

the stone :

  • Index KOBEL and ROEDER.

This study was carried out using 6 rootstocks : P. domestica (ERUNI), P. insititia (PIXY), P. marianna (GF 8.1), P. cerasifera (Mirabi ®), an hexaploid hybrid (JULIOR ®) and a pentaploid hybrid (P. 10.2) ; grafted with several cultivars : Green Gage, French Prune, Mirabelle and table fruit hybrids.

Only some results obtained with the main varieties are presented.

With Green Gage variety, we observe a rootstock effect on the main shoot characteristics except for the lateral shoot length.

There is no effect of the rootstock on the L/1 limb ratio.

The analysis of all results would allow to establish possible correlation between trunk girth (as vigor evaluation) and some traits such as shoot length or leaf area by length unit.
