ISHS Acta Horticulturae 359: V International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetic, Breeding and Pomology

PRELIMINARY EVALUATION OF THE SUITABILITY OF PLUM CULTIVARS FOR INTENSIVE CULTURE WITH SPECIAL EMPASIS ON BARE WOOD FORMATION

Authors:   H. Wustenberghs, K. Belmans, J. Keulemans
Abstract:
The growth evolution of shoots formed in 1988 on 8 plum cultivars was examined during four years. In the description special attention was payed to bare wood formation. It was shown that the percentage of very short shoots (spurs shorter than 1 cm) and the flower bud level on these spurs determine the sensitivity of plum cultivars to denudation. Therefore plum cultivars that show a high percentage of short spurs and have a high flower bud level on these spurs are evaluated negatively for high density plantations.
