ISHS Acta Horticulturae 359: V International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetic, Breeding and Pomology

PLUM PRODUCTION IN GERMANY

Author:   W. Hartmann
Abstract:
On the average 400 000 t of plums and prunes are produced per year in Germany. Only 25 % of this total production is put on the market, because most of the 20 million of plum trees are growing in extensive orchards or in house gardens. In the last years we note the expanding of area and much more the number of trees for market production. The market value is with 48 million DM twice as big as in sweet cherry production. Most important is the cultivation of table fruits and of fresh fruits for bakeries. The type of fruit the Germans like, differs considerable from other countries. The most important varieties and rootstocks and also the different training systems and plant distances are described.
