ISHS Acta Horticulturae 358: International Symposium on Alliums for the Tropics

CURRENT STATUS OF ALLIUM PRODUCTION IN TANZANIA

Authors:   T.A. Mtaita, D. Msuya
Abstract:
Allium spp. (Allium cepa, Allium sativum, Allium porrum) are important horticultural products in the urban market in Tanzania, and their very high potential in some selected areas (northern and southern highlands and the central plateau) of the country cannot be overemphasized. However, any effort geared towards improving and promoting production must be integrated into the overall development of horticulture within Tanzania. Currently, the export market is low as production is targeted mainly for domestic consumption. This paper discusses some of the production practices of Allium spp., in Tanzania, as well as constraints and recommendations to improve the quality and quantity of this vegetable group.
