THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE COMPOSITION OF THE NUTRIENT SOLUTION FOR HYDROPONICS LEEK CROPPING

Authors:   D. Tongaram, E. Schrevens, G. De Rijck
Abstract:
In a plastic greenhouse two (3,2) simplex lattice "mixture" experiments were designed to optimize both the cation and the anion composition of the nutrient solution for hydroponics leek (Allium porrum L. cv. Snowstar) cropping.

Seed propagation was carried out in peat beds in a climatized greenhouse. The seedlings were transplanted to an adapted recirculating hydroponics system (NFT, Nutrient Film Technique) at the five-leaf stage.

During the growing season, growth, development, and mineral content were analyzed for consecutive harvests. For quality and production parameters, based on these experiments, an optimal nutrient solution composition for hydroponics leek cultivation was postulated. For the mineral content of the white sheath and the leaves, K-Ca-Mg interactions were found in the cation experiment. No major interactions were discovered in the anion (N-P-S) experiment.
