ALLIUM PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IN BANGLADESH |

| Abstract:
Bangladesh is a low-lying country with a total area of 144 000 km2. The only significant uplands are in the northeast and southeast of the country, with average elevation of 240 m and 610 m, respectively. Bangladesh has a tropical monsoon climate marked by sweltering temperatures and high humidity. Onion and garlic play an important role in national agricultural production and farming systems. These crops are grown everywhere in the country during winter as backyard crops in sole cropping or intercropped with other vegetables. In addition to bulbs, green leaves of onion are also used for cooking and in salads. Farmers in Bangladesh produce these crops for their own consumption and surplus for marketing and export. The production system is described in this paper. | |
