STRATEGY FOR THE USE OF VIRUS-FREE SEED GARLIC IN FIELD PRODUCTION

Authors:   X. Peiwen, S. Huisheng, S. Ruijie, Y. Yuanjun
Abstract:
Garlic crops were infected by at least four viruses in Shandong Province. Virus-free garlic was obtained by meristem-tip culture combined with thermotherapy. The virus-free garlic plantlets were rapidly multiplied through the technique of multishoot culture. Optimum management of the plantlets transferred to soil and the use of bulbils enhanced multiplication. Yield of both bulbs and bolts of virus-free garlic increased by 55–114% and 66–175%, respectively, under this management. An effective scheme for multiplication and application of virus-free seed garlic has been developed. Ways to prevent the virus-free seed crops from reinfection by the viruses were studied.
