Abstract:
The importance of alliums as vegetable and cash crops is well appreciated in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). Although alliums are introduced crops, the participation of SADC in conservation efforts would be beneficial.
This paper discusses the present status of Allium genetic resource activities, constraints of plant genetic resource conservation, and the possible role of the SADC in the collaborative network for the conservation of Allium genetic resources.
