THE STATUS OF ALLIUMS IN THAILAND

Abstract:
Thailand is situated between latitude 5° N - 20° N and longitude 97° E - 106° E. The total area is approximately 51 360 000 ha of which 23 648 105 ha (40%) is in farm holdings and 358 400 ha in vegetables and flowers. About 94% of the 4.2 million tons of vegetable production is consumed in the country while the rest is exported in the form of fresh, frozen, dried, and processed vegetables. Current figures for the area and production of the three most important alliums are presented in table 1. Some basic information on these three crops, as they pertain to Thailand, and discussed in the following sections.
