Abstract:
Allium research for the tropics is needed in a number of areas.
These include genetic resource conservation and evaluation; breeding for the requirements of tropical farmers and consumers; seed production technology and organization; agronomic studies; epidemiological studies on disease and pest attack in relation to climate; physiological studies on the environmental responses of different types of short-day onions and on onion dormancy at high temperatures; training and technology transfer for better harvest and postharvest handling; improved storage structures; the economics of different storage methods; and optimizing the use of ambient ventilation.
