Abstract:
The agricultural importance of organic matter is known since antiquity.
However, the research developed during the last 20 years has contributed to stress this importance by the improvement of our knowledgement on its action mechanisms on soil fertility.
The present paper is a revision of the main aspects related to the role of organic matter on the growth and development of plants.
First, we define the concepts related to humus and organic matter in soil.
Next, on basis on fractionation techniques, we define the terms humic acids and fulvic acids.
The study of a diversity of application techniques, as well as, the way of absorption, shows their effects on micro and macronutrient contents, root and plant growth, membranes permeability, germination of seeds etc.
