ISHS Acta Horticulturae 357: III International Symposium on Protected Cultivation in Mild Winter Climates

TECHNICAL EVOLUTION OF THE SPANISH GREENHOUSES

Authors:   J.I. Montero, A. Antón
Abstract:
During the past 25 years the area of greenhouse structures in Spain has spread out along the Mediterranean Coast. It is estimated that about 24000Has are devoted to the production of vegetables, cut flowers and ornamental plants under greenhouses. Most of the structures are very simple since they are made with pole timber and steel wires.

This paper includes some results of the structural change and studies carried out in Spanish greenhouses in order to improve their internal climate. These modifications include the change of the shape and orientation to increase the light transmission during the winter, the installation of roof ventilators to improve air renovation, the use of double walls, water sleeves acting as passive solar collectors and radiant heating to increase night time temperature, and the evaluation of the climate of multitunnel greenhouses which, in some cases, are replacing the local made wooden structures.
