HORTICULTURAL CROPS IN GREENHOUSE AT THE BUKNOS AIRES' GREEN BKLT: DIFFUSION, RESULTS AND PRESPECTIVES.

Abstract:
Protected cultivation is a traditional practice in the Buenos Aires' Green Belt. Flower's growers were the first who began with it, in the 1930–40's. Lately, in the second half of the 80's, the greenhouse irrupted in the horticulture, and it was adopted by horticultural growers that had been making field crops by years, mainly in La Plata's Department, to cultivate celeries, tomatoes and pepper. They incorporated the protected cultivation as another alternative in their farms.

The investigation analyzes the main aspects of this adoption's process in the South Area of the Green Belt and examines the diffusion of greenhouse in horticultural crops, trying to set the form in which the diffusion had happened and the kind of growers that adopted that technology. Furthermore, the paper reviews the differences and similarities of the Buenos Aire's Green Belt process with its similars that had appeared previously in other mild-winter horticultural regions. Based in all its topics, the investigation advances in its perspectives and examines the transformations that the protected cultivation is producing actually in the farms' organization and in the social-economy region's scheme.

Then, the baseline data (proceedings from direct observations and qualified advisers) lets us to conclude that the diffusion of protected cultivation in horticulture was possible because it's a technology that has a great complementarity with the changes developed at the conssumption markets (the exigence of greater quality levels). It brought a fast transformation's process of the production's structure of the region, and, in a great part, it is continuing with the sequence that the implementation of this technology had developed in another regions of mild-winter climates.
