ISHS Acta Horticulturae 356: II International Symposium on Olive Growing

LIGHT SPECTRUM AFFECTS SOME ANATOMICAL, PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL OLIVE LEAVES CHARACTERISTICS.

Authors:   C. Vitagliano, M. Catania
Abstract:
The photosynthetic light responce curve, chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, transpiration, anatomical and morphological characthristics of olive leaves are altered when the environmental light spectrum composition is changed. In plants that received blue light, yellow-blu, yellow, the number of cell layers decreased from 3 to 2 in palisade tissue at high ζ value while the cellular distention increased. Also spongy mesophyll/palisade tissue ratio increased. With increasing ζ specific leaf area (dm2/g d.w.) increased while stomatal density (n/mm2) and stomatal size decreased. Plants grown in ambient conditions with 2.22 ζ had a gas exchange rate, chlorophyll content (μg/mg d.w.) higher than plants that received light with 0.81 ζ value. At 1.26 ζ leaves had intermediate values of these parameters. It appears there is a close correlation between leaf tissue characteristics and the change in photon flux density ratios in red to far red.
