ISHS Acta Horticulturae 356: II International Symposium on Olive Growing

EFFECT OF NITROGEN AND POTASSIUM ON YIELD AND SOME FRUIT QUALITY PARAMETERS OF OLIVE TREE

Authors:   M.E. Marcelo, P.V. Jordão
Keywords:   Cv. Carrasquenha, fat content, fertilization, fruit mean weight, olive production, ripeness index
Abstract:
In a mature olive grove cv. Carrasquenha, established on a Calcaric Cambisol in the Portuguese Region of Elvas, a field experiment was set up aiming to study the effect of nitrogen and potassium, applied to the soil, on yield and some quality parameters of the fruit. The study lasted for three years (1990 – 1992) and four N and K application rates were considered (0, 65, 130, 195 kg.ha-1 of N and 0, 80, 160, 240 kg.ha-1 of K2O). No significant (P>0.05) mean effects were found due to either N or K application on fruit yield, ripeness index, fruit mean weight, fat content and on olive oil yield. Conversely, significant (P≤0.001) differences were found between the annual mean yields and fruit quality parameters.
