Abstract:
Potted Frantoio and Moraiolo olive plants were fumigated for five months with a gradient of sulphur dioxide concentrations in the range 0–100 ppbv and photosynthetic gas exchange and histological features were determined in new formed leaves.
No visible injury symptom was detected, but treatment induced significant depression in net CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance and transpiration and an increase in vapor pressure deficit in Frantoio.
Moraiolo did not undergo any significant physiological modification. "Transpirating surface" was dramatically reduced in both cultivars by the treatment.
Total leaf thickness was also reduced.
