ISHS Acta Horticulturae 356: II International Symposium on Olive Growing

MECHANISMS OF SALT TOLERANCE IN OLIVE PLANTS

Authors:   M. Tattini, C. Ponzio, M.A. Coradeschi, R. Tafani, M.L. Traversi
Abstract:
Several olive (Olea europaea L.) genotypes were supplied with increasing NaCl concentrations in a sand culture system. Analysis of growth was carried out, and both nutrient uptake and transport rates were estimated. A negative relationship was found between genotype's vigour and salt tolerance. Net salt import to the leaves was found to be primarily involved in salt exclusion mechanism in Olea europaea, since genotypes differing in salt tolerance also differed in salt transport from root to shoot.
