OLIVE TREE GERMPLASM: DESCRIPTOR LISTS OF CULTIVATED VARIETIES IN THE WORLD |

| Abstract:
For each olive growing country, this paper reports a list of characters for all indigenous and imported cultivars, using world literature. The object of this work was to endow this field too with an up-to-date list of germplasm cultivated worldwide, achieving greatest possible precision. To make this work universally accessible, a computerized system was used in which only a few characteristics were considered for each variety, eg. variety name, synonyms, country and cultivation area, purpose (oil-double purpose table), fertility, productivity, oil content and rooting ability. At the present time more than 1000 cultivars have been classified with about 3000 synonyms. These lists are not definitive and need to be updated frequently, because of the difficulty of obtaining valid information from every country. | |
