| Abstract:
Olive cultivation is characterized by numerous varieties-populations, the majority of whiach are probably autoctonous. This varieties frequently present heterogeneous genetic characteristics negatively influencing quali-quantitative apsects of production. Research has demonstrated that these varieties are formed by a large number of clones which arose at different times and often moltiplied unconsciously. Detailed investigations regarding the true healt condition of these plants, and the role, of viral diseases, is however lacking. The selection of the best clones among the most important varieties-populations, could permit a considerable improvment in olive cultivation, as already long been the case in viticulture following genetic and plant healt selection. It is necessary that by selecting for plant healt in addition to genetic characters, better control of viral diseases can be obtained, even though present knowledge in this field may be incomplete. A rigorous methodology is therefore proposed for clonal and plant healt selection in olive. | |
