ETHYLENE EFFECT ON "IN VITRO" OLIVE SEED GERMINATION (OLEA EUROPAEA L.)

Authors:   M. Lambardi, L.M.R. Rinaldi, D. Menabeni, A. Cimato
Abstract:
Ethylene effect on in vitro olive seed germination (cv Moraiolo) was studied by the application of various compounds, interfering with ethylene biosynthesis or action (ACC, ethephon, AVG, and STS). Ethephon and ACC improved the germination of unchilled seeds, as both germination percentage, and germination rate. AVG strongly slowed down germination during the first 4 weeks, thus negatively affecting the germination rate. Furthermore, ethephon lowered the germination rate of previously 5/15-day chilled seeds, while STS had a negative effect only on the 5-day chilled ones.
