EVOLUTION OF THE SELECTION CRITERIA OF MAIZE IN THE COURSE OF THE LAST 20 YEARS. PERSPECTIVES

Author:   Dr. B. Le Buanec
Abstract:
Maize is one of the most important crops in the world along with wheat and rice. It is cultivated on an area of about 130 million ha in most of the tropical and temperate countries. There are three very different crops known under the name of maize: sweet corn, pop corn and what I would call field maize.

It is not possible, within the framework of a presentation such as this, to cover the criteria of selection of maize for its different forms in all the countries. I would therefore willingly restrict myself to field maize, which I shall simply call maize henceforth in my presentation. Even in restricting it so, the use of maize is very diversified : human consumption, animal consumption either as harvested grain or under the various forms of silage, industrial use: starch, semolina, distillery. Here again it will be necessary to make choices. To illustrate my points, I shall take three examples:

  • Maize grain in France
  • Silage maize in North-Western Europe
  • Qualitative improvement of the grain
