ISHS Acta Horticulturae 355: Plant Breeding for Mankind - Symposium Agribex 94

RESULTS OF PLANT BREEDING DURING THE LAST DECADE IN RELATION TO RESISTANCE AGAINST PATHOGENS

Author:   C. GESSLER
Abstract:
The results of breeding plants to obtain higher yield and better quality has advanced production enormously in intensive agricultural systems, to a lesser extent in low input systems where pest and diseases are a relevant constraint. Breeding for resistance against those constraints is common in all major crops. In this paper resistance breeding against apple scab, against the two major Coffee diseases, rust and coffee berry disease, against anthracnose and rust of French bean, against powdery mildew, leaf rust, glume blotch and stem rust of bread wheat, and against the multitude of tomato diseases are presented and the impact evaluated. General consideration are deducted from the cases presented with the perspective open by the new biotechnology methods.
