Abstract:
Since 1950 the area and the number of fodder beet varieties admitted to the Belgian Catalogue decreased severely, also the characteristics of the fodder beet varieties changed a lot since then.
The modern fodder beet is monogerm, polyploid, with a good bolting resistance, a good ground cover and a high yield potential.
Based on the results of all the tested varieties, whether or not admitted, the dry matter yield of the root improves with 0.4% a year by selection in the period 1950–1993. This was realized during 2 periods : 1950–1965 and 1975–1993 with an increase of 1.25 % and 0.45% respectively.
During 1965–1975 there was a stabilization in dry matter yield potential.
The recent criteria for admission of fodder beet varieties in Belgium ensure only the admission of varieties with very good characteristics.
