CONVENTIONAL WHEAT BREEDING, FACING REALITIES OF MODERN PORTUGUESE AGRICULTURE

Authors:   F. Bagulho, B. Maçãs, J. Coutinho
Abstract:
Bread wheat is a very important crop in the traditional agricultural systems of South Portugal, where a strong mediterranean influence is noted. Due to CAP and global world policies, wheat prices in Portugal are decreasing.

To find new alternatives to this specific environment seems to be difficult. So, cost reduction and the search of new technical and economic options is essential, due to the need to maintain wheat cultivation. breeding and selection of new genotypes suitable for these new conditions are one of the ways we must follow. This study point out the existence of genetic variation and biodiversity that allows ENMP cereal breeding program to develop integrated studies that conduct to the selection of genotypes suitable for the specific mediterranean region.
