TRITICALE BREEDING: PROBLEMS AND POSSIBILITIES

Authors:   G. Haesaert, A. De Baets
Abstract:
Since about 25 years triticale (x Triticosecale Wittmack) is introduced in practical farming. Nowadays more than 100 cultivated triticale varieties are available which are now grown on more than 2 million hectares worldwide.

Sufficient genetic variation is needed to obtain the objectives of a breeding program. Because of the lack of natural evolution processes by triticale the necessarily genetic variation must be sought by the parent species.

Several data recorded improvement for important breeding objectives. The breeding methods used by triticale must take into account some specific features of the crop.
